My Product Criteria

My product is an Instagram account with pictures and short videos with signs. It needs to be easy to understand and not be too fast. My posts will have only my hand/ arm and torso in it so that nothing can distract the goal of the video, which is explaining the sign, if needed I will also use my voice to explain it in a broader way. The videos will be around 10 to 15 seconds, I will demonstrate the sign and extra time as well. My format has to be 2 photos in a row and then one video, and so on. Here are more criteria:

Knowing the full alphabet in ASL
- As I believe it is one of the main parts of learning sign language, especially as if there is a term I don't know, I can ask the informer to spell it for me, facilitating our communication.
Questions for Introductions in ASL
- To start a conversation, I must know how to ask questions such as, “How are you?”, “What's your name” and many others. For this, I will make around 5 posts, showing my progress.
Introduction in ASL
- Now that I know a few basic questions, I must learn how to answer them. By knowing phrases as “My name is” and “I was born in Amsterdam” are key for getting to know someone, I believe those are the basics for ASL as they are common conversation starters. Knowing how to tell someone how I'm feeling is also important to know. For this, I will make around 10 posts on my Instagram page.
Days of the week, the weather and the time
- To be able to understand basic information, I felt like learning the terminology for the days of the week, weather and time would be extremely necessary. For this I will make around 5 posts, in each post, I will also include questions such as “What's the day of the week?” and “What's the time?” are necessary.
Reach the basics of ASL
- I want to have around 30 posts or more to record my ASL journey, hoping to inspire others and even teach peers about the importance of ASL.

Sarah Marawad's Personal Project: Learning Sign Language
The reason to why I decided to pursue this project is because I have had deaf people around me in life. I had old friends who had hearing deficiency, it was upsetting to see how I was not able to talk to them properly. This topic upsets me to this day, how we are not taught the basics of ASL in schools, how many kids can feel left out just because they can’t talk to others properly. That was the reason as to why I wanted to learn ASL, I wanted to share my journey with the community, hoping to be able to inspire others. Besides that, I did not have any prior knowledge to ASL.
